Developed in the late 19th century, Barton Heights is one of Richmond’s first streetcar suburbs and its first northern suburb. Real estate developer James Barton acquired the land in 1889 and divided it into 200 50-foot-wide lots, where buyers built homes in the Queen Anne and Victorian styles. Street car service from Barton Heights to First Street began in 1894 and made it possible for residents to commute to and from downtown Richmond.
