Byrd Theater was designed in the French Empire style and first opened on December 24th, 1928. Originally named the State Theater, it was renamed for William Byrd II. The first theater in Virginia to have a sound system, the Byrd is also equipped with a Wurlitzer organ because it was uncertain whether talking motion pictures would stay popular. Today the Byrd shows movies year-round, and although it has undergone certain upgrades, many of the original aspects of the building, such as the auditorium seats and projectors, are original.
