Expanding the Narrative Lecture

Thursday, February 23, 2023 6:00 pm 8:00 pm

Expanding the Narrative Thursday, February 23rd, 6 p.m. | Panel Discussion | VMHC | $25 ticket/$10 students 21+

The contributions of women, LBGTQ, and people of color are noted in less than 10% of National Register of Historic Places submissions. Learn how you can be a part of the movement to expand and diversify the field of historical preservation—everyone’s history deserves to be protected.

Historically marginalized voices often fall outside of traditional preservation efforts.

Join us at the VMHC to hear our panel members discuss their work on writing these stories back into the narrative to highlight and protect buildings and spaces that are not always initially valued.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund has attracted significant financial support from donors and has provided grants to more than 150 local preservation projects across the country to date.

Who tells these stories? Learn how different groups are helping to expand the field of preservation so that everyone’s story is told.

Panelists:
Blake McDonald | Manager, Architectural Survey & Cost Share Grant Program, Department of Historic Resources, on his work with the LGBTQ Heritage Advisory Group
Krista Weatherford | Director of Programming and Community Engagement, Maymont, on her work on the exhibition, In Service and Beyond: Domestic Work and Life in a Gilded Age Mansion
