Mark the spookiest of months by learning more about the funerary and mourning symbols used by Roberts Mills in the design of Monumental Church, which is the site of one of the country’s greatest tragedies.

Thanks to recent popular books (Rachel Beanland’s “The House is on Fire” and Meredith Henne Baker’s non-fictionThe Richmond Theater Fire: Early America’s First Great Disaster”) the site’s importance in our national history is being rediscovered. Monumental Church was constructed in 1814 as a community tribute to the victims of the Richmond Theater Fire three years earlier. Discover how the Richmond community processed their grief through the built environment, as well as other less tangible means. Mourning dress encouraged.
