Update: February 2024
Last November, the School Board awarded a $30M contract to Gulf Seaboard General Contractors, Inc. and work has begun! They have started abatement and continue cleaning in the basement level. The mold that began growing inside prior to the addition of the temporary roof has been cleaned up and removed. The City has approved the mechanical and utilities plan for the new structure, and continues to work with RPS to finalize the full building permit.
Update: Spring 2023
We are pleased to report that Richmond Public Schools has received a state grant to help cover the costs of rebuilding Fox Elementary! Combined with the insurance payout and the funding from the Mayor’s budget, this grant puts RPS over the line to cover the entire cost of the construction project, which is estimated at $25 million. The new roof is already under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of June, after which RPS will post a solicitation for contractors to bid on the rest of the project. School leaders anticipate a fully renovated Fox Elementary School will be available to students by Fall 2025!
Update: Winter 2022
Last spring, in the wake of the fire on February 11, 2022, we updated you on the outpouring of community support and our advocacy for a preservation approach for Fox. This beloved building has played a tremendous role in shaping the lives of many generations of Richmonders. We know the importance of our schools as places of education, but this fire reminded us of the importance of schools as places of collective memory, family and community. We are pleased to see the Superintendent and the School Board moving forward with a renovation of Fox, and the inclusion in the Mayor’s proposed budget of additional funding necessary to complete the project.
