Student Volunteer Form
Greetings Richmond students!
Historic Richmond is seeking students to add their perspectives to Richmond’s sense of historical importance of architecture and placemaking. We would love your help by photographing, drawing and writing about your sense of Place and thus helping YOU earn volunteer hours to add to your job/college application portfolio.
About Historic Richmond:
Our mission is to shape the future of Richmond by preserving our distinctive historic character, sparking revitalization and championing our important architectural legacy. Our city is evolving every day. The skyline and the landscape are changing. We are dedicated to keeping the Richmond of tomorrow unique and distinct from every other city on Earth.
How you can earn volunteer hours:
Here are some sample assignments, if you have your own ideas, reach out to us, we’d love to hear them!
Assignment 1
Simply walk around your neighborhood, or around your favorite Richmond places. Take photos of (or draw) Richmond’s old structures and places that you want to talk about. (Bonus points if you get seasonal things like flowers, autumn leaves, snow, people having fun in front of old buildings.)
POST it and
- tag us (@HistoricRVA on Instagram, @HistoricRichmond on Facebook)
- tell us WHY this old place or building is important to you
- note where you are- the neighborhood, the block (1800 block of W Cary Street) and even better, the exact address so, if you’re interested, we can show you how to research the stories and people who lived there.
- research and mention in your post elements of the architecture or neighborhood
- fill out the waiver information, here:

Assignment 2
Reach out to an older family member who lives with or near you / a neighbor to answer questions in their own voices, hearing what is similar, what is different, what the older person remembers and how they perceive the same place differently than the other… you could record your conversation, take photos, video, all kinds of ways to share these conversations and thoughts.
Answer:
- Note the address and neighborhood and who you have involved.
- “What is your favorite place here? Why?”
- “What stories / what do you know about this place?”
- Take pictures and tag us (@HistoricRVA on Instagram, @HistoricRichmond on Facebook)
- fill out the waiver information, here:
