Quoit Club: Oakwood Arts

Oakwood Arts

Thursday, April 20, 2023 6:00 pm 8:00 pm

Oakwood Arts, a 2022 Golden Hammer Award winner, is a nonprofit with a mission to make art and careers in creative industries accessible to all through community engagement, inspiring programming, and experiential education. The nonprofit renovated a historic church, an adjacent daycare building, and a small cottage/rectory in the Oakwood-Chimborazo historic district.

The first phase addressed hidden structural problems, caused by years of vacancy and deferred maintenance by replacing the sanctuary roof and repairing structural damage. Additional renovations, including restrooms and office, new exterior stairs, a deck, and ramps to make the spaces universally accessible, were completed in 2022. An EPA stormwater management grant funded a rain garden and native landscaping to help protect the historic buildings from future ground water damage.

In a rapidly changing neighborhood, Oakwood Arts offers an inclusive space for economically and culturally diverse Richmonders to gather, interact, and learn from one another. Programs here include classes and workshops on the digital and technical skills students need to succeed in the creative workforce.
