The History and Documentation of Slave Housing in Virginia

Thank you to all the participants who made Historic Richmond’s presentation, “The History and Documentation of Slave Housing in Virginia” such a success.

We were grateful for the knowledge our panelists Elvatrice Belsches, Jobie Hill, and Douglas Sanford kindly shared on this topic, and for the sponsorship Dominion Energy and TCV Trust & Wealth Management, all without whom this lecture would not have been possible.

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a slave house, cabin, quarter, or dwelling? Or how to go about researching the lives of the enslaved people who lived in these houses? Or when so many of these houses are gone or heavily altered, what can still be learned? Join us as we explore the various types of slave housing, stories of the past enslaved occupants and current plans for interpretation, efforts to identify and record the houses that still exist, what we can tell from buildings still standing verse archaeological sites, and the challenges in this work.

Panelists:

Jobie Hill | Historic Architect, Founder of Saving Slave Houses and former Preservation Architect & Mulberry Row Project Manager at Monticello

Douglas Sanford | Archaeologist, Co-founder of the Virginia Slave Housing Project and Professor Emeritus of Historic Preservation at University of Mary Washington
